Pithy Quote Five

Household Words
I don't wish to glorify the impoverished half of this equation; these children had swollen bellies from kwashiorkor, and they had parasites. But they also had families they could not forget under any circumstances, or ever abandon, or be abandoned by, however they might fall on madness or illness or hard times. I don't believe that the word homeless as it's used in our language could be translated there.”
In the story, Household Wars, it talks about homelessness and what it means. Before this quote it talked about how even though the children and people in Africa are sick and don’t have very much they still love their family and value them very highly. It shows that even though a person may not have that much they still had families that they knew they could count on and that would be there for them. They may not have a home but they are not homeless because a home is where a person is loved by people and a place where you’ll always be accept and loved. They definition we Americans give to homeless is different then what other places might give the word.  The author says that he’s not saying that just because they have their family they are well off. They still have diseases and other terrible things, it’s just that they can depend on their family and will always have their family love them.
In America today people look down on those who are homeless. They’re considered to be lesser and most likely deserved to be homeless. It shouldn’t matter whether you have a house, but whether you’re loved. People should be loved but they should also be able to have the security of a home, a place where they can feel safe and also loved. People should have a family that they can depend on and know that they’ll always be there and love them. Because like the people and children in Africa it shouldn’t matter whether you’re homeless, everyone should feel loved and have a family.
I think that it’s so important to have a family or someone you can call family that you can always depend on to be there and not abandon you, who will always love you no matter what, through the good times and the bad. It makes me so grateful to know that I have my family and that they will always love me and be there for me no matter what I do. It’s sad to see people on the streets without a home and some without a family. No one deserves to live like that. A home is where you are loved, home is where the heart is.
