Pithy Quote One

Listening is an Act of Love
“One of the things that has accompanied me, followed me, surrounded me, wrapped me is that feeling of gratitude for whatever happens. That event was like being picked up by the scruff of the neck and shaken…Just be grateful that you’ve got these days and these hours and these wonderful people in your life. Just be grateful for that.” (109)
Martha Conant told her story through the Storycorps project; in the book Listening is an Act of Love. She was aboard United Airlines flight 232 when it crashed on July 19, 1989, and was one the few lucky survivors. After the crash she had a revelation of sorts. She realized that life is too short and that you have to just live your life and be grateful for everything in it.
I think this is a way that everyone should live his or her life because you never know what day could be the last day. It shouldn’t take being in a near death experience to realize this, we should just automatically be thankful for everyday we have. In her interview Conant says “I decided that I wanted to live with as few regrets as possible.” (107) This goes for everyone. A person shouldn’t have regrets in life. We should all be grateful for all the people in our lives and everyday that we are alive. And as Martha Conant said we should be grateful for the days, hours and all the loving, caring people in our lives.
